Studying abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica has been one of best and most incredible experiences I have had in my life.
Last year, in June of 2014, I completed my first marathon and that was when I knew I had a passion for running. I was unsure if I would be able to run regularly while in Costa Rica, but I wanted to continue to make it a priority in my life.
Likewise, numerous students in the USAC program this semester enjoy running as well as other physical activities. Carlitos Oviedo, who works for USAC Heredia, has greatly contributed by providing several activities to help the USAC students stay physically fit.
This spring semester on April 18, at the Central Pacific Coast, 15 USAC students will be participating in a 10-kilometer race with eight thousand other runners swarming the beach.
To help students who have never ran in an event like this before, Carlitos, has provided a training program to prepare students for success. Not only are students participating in the 10K, but they are also involved in the USAC soccer practice.
Students practice every Tuesday with students from other programs. In addition, we play against students and teachers from the Universidad Nacional. For our farewell party, one of the activities is a soccer tournament with the surrounding USAC programs in Costa Rica. Hopefully we will take home first place!
This is a fantastic way to meet new people and get exercise.
Another option to get moving is the dance classes that USAC Heredia offers. This is a one credit class offered twice a week to students. Carlitos, the dance instructor, teaches various types of dance.
Among the classes are Bachata, Bolero, Cumbia, Salsa, and Merengue. This coming Sunday, students in dance class are going to a local dance club called “El Tipico Latino” to practice.
Our final exam for this class consists of going to best dance club in the country and dancing with Ticos. Students in Heredia are taking advantage of the many opportunities to stay in shape while studying abroad.
