5 reasons to study abroad in the medieval city of Maastricht
University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) offers a lot of study abroad programs in Europe, so narrowing down a destination can be tricky when every location is amazing. Here are five reasons why you should consider Maastricht, The Netherlands, for your study abroad.

Reason #1 You love medieval history
Maastricht is rich in ancient Roman history. Today, you can still see the Middle-Ages-esque city layout with its wide main roads, narrow alleys, and cobblestone streets. Visit the Late Gothic period Ding House (built in 1470) or enjoy a coffee at Hotel Derlon while admiring Roman sanctuary ruins in the museum cellar below. Whether you’re standing on a bridge or near a basilica, you’ll have no trouble finding pieces of history to explore.
Reason #2 Easy access to the rest of Europe
Situated near the borders of Belgium and Germany, with a regional airport only 20 minutes from campus, it’s easy to visit other European locations from Maastricht. Bonus: Europe’s excellent public transportation makes taking buses, subways, or taxis a cinch.

Reason #3 Amazing Dutch culture
From hearty cuisine to cafe culture, historical sites galore to lovely views, and art festivals to bicycles as the primary mode of transportation, you’ll be happily surprised by the Dutch lifestyle. Forbes called Maastricht a hidden gem of Europe, and we wholeheartedly agree.
Reason #4 A large English presence
Although many students choose to study abroad to learn a new language, not everyone wants to. USAC offers programs in both English-speaking countries and countries with a large presence of English speakers, which can make cultural adjustment easier. In Maastricht, most citizens speak English and Dutch, and courses are taught in English. However, Maastricht University also offers introductory Dutch language courses for students who are interested.

Reason #5 Tons of festivals
Maastricht hosts many cultural festivals throughout the year, which are the perfect way to experience Dutch culture, meet locals, and enjoy tasty food. Look out for Carnival in the spring, King’s Day in April, Cultura Nova in the fall, Magical Maastricht in December, and many more.
See you soon in Maastricht!
