Time Out’s list of the best 50 cities in the world includes 12 USAC study abroad program host locations. In addition to ranking as a high-quality city, there are several locations — like Berlin, Edinburgh, or Paris — on the list that enrolled students frequently tour.
The rankings are based on interviews with 18,500 citizens around the world about their local food, culture, events, cost of living, satisfaction, and more. USAC cities that make the list include:
- 4. Melbourne, Australia, where students take classes at Deakin University, ranked second overall for the restaurants and eating out category.
- 5. London, England, is the third overall in the culture and green spaces categories, which is makes sense when you consider it’s home to the London Metropolitan University and University of Roehampton.
- 9. Shanghai, China, is a place where 80% of respondents said it was easy to meet people and make friends. Students can take classes at Shanghai Normal University.
- 12. Lisbon, Portugal, home of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, achieved a high safety rating and is the third-most affordable city to explore.
- 22. Madrid, Spain, where students take classes at Vicálvaro Campus, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, is the fourth-cheapest city to go out and see art.
- 28. Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a foodie paradise and the third-most affordable city for dining. Students can enroll in courses with Chiang Mai University.
- 34. Brighton, England, is a lively city that is connected to the University of Brighton. Local feedback tabulates that it is the third most diverse and inclusive city on the list.
- 35. Prague, Czech Republic, has some of the best public transportation, which helps students get to and from Charles University.
- 42. Seoul, Korea, a large metropolitan area with Kookmin University, Korea University, and Yonsei University, is ideal for students wishing to see skyscrapers and mountainous surroundings outside of class.
- 45. Bilbao, Spain, is the second-most welcoming and friendly city on the list, which means classes at the University of the Basque Country fairly low-stress.
- 48. Bristol, England, is a diverse and inclusive city, which welcomes students to take classes at University of Bristol.
