Students witness historic equality speech

USAC students watch historic speech on Uruguay’s stock exchange floor.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) students in the Montevideo program had the rare opportunity to watch the elected leaders of Uruguay speak about advancing gender equality on the stock exchange floor for the first time in the nation. The field trip was part of their Contemporary Women’s Activism class, which studies the Ring the Bell for Gender Equality initiative.

USAC students listened to Uruguayan Vice President Beatriz Argimon deliver a speech with President Luis Lacalle Pou, representatives from UN Women, and Mayor Silvana Pissano by her side. She recognized that women are not treated equally in her home nation or the world at large. Certain barriers are in place in the finance sector, which can be addressed right on the floor of the Uruguayan stock exchange, Bolsa de Valores de Montevideo (BVM).

“March started and Montevideo turned purple!” Orlando S. wrote in a post. “We listened to Uruguay Vice President Beatriz Argimon say, ‘invest in women to accelerate progress.’”

Ring the Bell for Gender Equality is a joint effort between the Sustainable Stock ExchangesUN Global CompactUN WomenInternational Finance Corporation: IFC and World Federation of Exchanges. It asks global ‘bell ringers’ to let business leaders in the private sector know they play a vital role in combating gender inequality and achieving sustainable development goals. To participate, leaders sign a commitment to raise awareness of Women’s Empowerment Principles after the opening ring of the stock market for the day. This year is the first year Uruguay is participating.
