The first days of studying abroad are exhilarating, sometimes stressful, and always full of surprises. We asked students in San Sebastián, Spain to reflect back on their first week when their study abroad journeys were getting started. Students also got the chance to experience the regatta, a famous sport festival that takes place in San Sebastián in the fall. Here are their stories:

“In general, I have had the most incredible transition living in San Sebastián and studying abroad! The city is incredibly scenic and beautiful and not to mention has everything that a person could want while living in another country. I feel like I have had absolutely no culture shock thus far, and am confident in living here for four months, and super excited for my journey here.”
Maddie Alexander, Cal Poly
“The first thing I noticed was the welcoming nature of the people here, as well as the pride everyone has for their home. Another part of the culture here that I am extremely impressed with is the value of family and time spent together.”

“I have had a great first week in San Sebastián and, so far, have learned so much and felt at home instantly. This past week, I got to use to my new apartment in Gros on Zabaleta St. I learned how to navigate myself through the city, bought a bus pass and groceries as well as shopped a little. …So many things are new for me but I am really loving it here.”

“The regatta was absolutely breath taking. The energy of the city was so incredible and unlike anything I have ever experienced….. It was special to see the entire city outside together and exuberant to be supporting this festival. It made me think “this is how a community should look, and how people should live their lives”. I love the lifestyle here so much…… In one week of being here, I already want to move here and live in a community similar to this one.”

Ben Alston, University of Iowa
“At the end, (of the regatta) people were screaming and jumping up and down when the green team crossed the finish line. After the race, all of Parte Vieja was roaring in celebration….. We soaked in the energy of the families and communities walking by us.”

“The rowing regatta was a very unique experience seeing everybody celebrate afterwards together as one was something I did not expect but was very glad to be a part of. I very much look forward to learning even more about the Basque culture after a week of great times in the Basque Country.”
