Volunteering while studying abroad is something that many students look forward to and seek out when choosing programs and locations. Being able to give back to a community that has welcomed you so graciously is a great feeling. In addition, volunteering provides opportunities to practice the language, meet locals, learn more about the culture and focus on something besides school work.
This summer, USAC students in Shanghai had the opportunity to volunteer at an elementary school where they were able to help teach the students English.
“I can’t say enough about how great, creative and inspiring the students are to the children,” said You Sha, the Resident Director for USAC students in Shanghai.
USAC students used the popular technique of teaching songs in English to the elementary school students. Music is universal in human culture, as is language and communication. Using music to teach foreign languages has become a popular teaching method among professors and educators of all age groups. From children’s nursery rhymes to popular songs, these can help the students get accustomed to the pronunciation and meaning of different words. There are a variety of ways students can give back while studying abroad. There are more opportunities to teach English in several other locations including France, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica and Chile. If teaching isn’t your thing, there are several other options such as volunteering in hospitals or in more corporate settings. Students studying in Gold Coast, Australia could potentially have the opportunity to volunteer at sports stadiums or major tourist events.
Volunteering is a great way to meet locals, build your resume and gain valuable experience.
