Rylie is the program advisor for USAC Japan and Korea programs
I’m originally from the Pacific Northwest from a small-town west of Olympia, Washington (Yes, the land of vampires from Twilight). I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with my undergraduate degree in Economics in December of 2019. I’ve traveled extensively throughout western Europe and have a passion for all things international!
Where did you study abroad?
I studied abroad through USAC in Lyon, France the first semester of my Sophomore year and worked as a peer advisor for two years following my study abroad program. I stayed with a host family during my time in Lyon and it was an amazing opportunity to get French speaking experience. Studying abroad sparked my passion in International Education and I am so excited to give back to USAC through being a Program Advisor.

Favorite memory from time abroad?
When I embarked on my journey abroad to Lyon, I had a flight delay that allowed me time to explore Reykjavik, Iceland. It was my first-time solo traveling, and I was lucky to wander the freezing streets of Reykjavik and gain a sense of independence prior to studying abroad. Because of plunging into the deep end of solo travel, I have since traveled to over ten countries by myself.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?
So far, France! I was able to travel around the country extensively while studying abroad and made me fall in love with the French culture. I got to experience France in both a rural and an urban setting, and I loved being able to speak French everywhere I went. I now incorporate a lot of the French culture into my day to day life, and it’s an experience that forever changed me!

If you could go on any USAC program, what would it be and why?
I think I would go to The Hague in Netherlands! I am inspired by the way of life there, and I would love to learn more about the culture. I’m fascinated with hygge! The Netherlands program in The Hague offers a lot of business courses, which is an area of interest I’m constantly trying to expand my expertise in. I’ve traveled to Amsterdam, but I think that areas outside the major cities have a lot to offer.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like all activities that are cozy, and love snuggling up next to my cat and reading a good book. I’m also an avid hiker and an outdoors enthusiast.
What is a weird fact about you?
I have a cinnamon allergy! Cinnamon is in a lot of random foods, so it’s a tough one to avoid.
What’s on your bucket list?
To visit the Faroe Islands, the Galapagos, and Japan. I would love to roam among the sheep in the Faroes, see all that Darwin explored, and to see the cherry blossoms bloom in Japan.
