Sarah advises for the Costa Rica, Cuba, and Israel programs
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, but I moved up to Reno for school and lived here ever since. Growing up, my parents took me on many adventures which is why I have such wanderlust now. I’ve visited Israel twice, Italy, South Africa, and Costa Rica. I am a mom to many, many plants and one lazy cat named Mia.
What is your favorite memory from your time abroad?
My host family in San Ramón was wonderful and I was so lucky to know them. My tica mom was also very talented and took painting classes in town. Every Thursday my host mom would invite her painting class friends over for some café and snacks on the back patio and she would invite me to join. We would sit outside, paint, drink coffee, and listen to the rain. I think that was when I really learned the meaning of “pura vida”.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Anytime I’m not working, I try to spend outside. My favorite activities include hiking, gardening, and reading by the river. I also really enjoy crafting. Lately I’m into candle making, macramé, and making flower bouquets.
What is a weird fact about you?
I’m pretty obsessed with Lord of the Rings. In high school, my teacher even called me a hobbit because my best friend and I dressed up as hobbits for Halloween. To this day, the nick name has stuck with my family and friends. It doesn’t help that I’m not exactly tall…
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
I would title my book “One Flew Over the Couscous Nest”. It would be a cookbook containing a series of recipes that I collect while traveling around the Mediterranean Sea and Middle East. I love the food from that region of the world so this book would be the perfect excuse to try as much falafel, couscous, and hummus as humanly possible. Plus I could share all the cool cultural and historical significance behind the food.
What’s on your bucket list?
Currently, my top bucket list item is to hike every National Park in America. I have always loved hiking around National Parks and it’s been a passion of mine for a while. I’ve gone to a few parks already but one day I hope to see them all. So far my favorite national park is Zion. The next one I plan to visit is Glacier National Park.
