While the list of things to do, try, and see in Shanghai is practically endless, it’s also important to stick to your budget. Here are five things to do right in Shanghai during your study abroad that are totally free.
Explore the bustling Tianzifang alleyways
Located in the French Concession area, these alleyways are part neighborhood, part coffee shop, and part art walk. Lanterns and flags crisscross the alleys, making it the perfect place to snap some photos and explore with friends.
Enjoy the view at The Bund
The Bund is a waterfront promenade and protected historical area, meaning that you can enjoy views of the Suzhou River while admiring colonial-era architecture and futuristic skyscrapers. Visit in the morning to avoid the crowds or at night to enjoy the colorful neon light show.
Visit the Shanghai Museum
The Shanghai Museum on People’s Square offers exhibitions on Chinese painting, calligraphy, ceramics, and even a jade collection. Be sure to give yourself a couple hours to stroll through the exhibits and dive into ancient Chinese history.
Snap a selfie on Yuyuan Old Street
This street is part of the old town area and dates to the Ming Dynasty but has been renovated for tourists. Enjoy traditional architecture, gardens, pavilions, and waterfront views alongside quaint shops and restaurants.
Check out Tian’an sunshine plaza
When you hear the words “sunshine plaza” you probably don’t imagine a shopping mall hidden inside a vertical forest of 1,000 artificial trees, but that’s exactly what it is. There’s a park across the road where you can get a great view of the mall (and take some Instagram-worthy photos).
